Cinderella & Four Knights – Review

  • Aired: Aug 12, 2016 to Oct 1, 2016

Here is the thing: I started watching this drama without much expectations, because you should know, the idea of a modern Cinderella is a kind of out fashion. We need more empowered women in the Dramaland.

The original plot says a lot about the initial episodes, so let me give you the chance of being familiarized with this drama:

Eun Ha Won is in the third grade of high school. She hopes to become a teacher which her late mother always wished for. Ha Won has a bright personality and a strong set of morals, but she is unhappy at home. She’s unattached from her father, step-mother, and step-sister and also mistreated. Ha-Won works various part-time jobs to pay for her upcoming university tuition fees. She knows she needs to make more money to pay for the storage of her mother’s ashes at the cemetery. Her mother’s ashes were recently removed because of unpaid bills.

Meanwhile, Ji Woon , Hyun Min and Seo Woo are spoiled cousins and live together in the mansion Sky House. With their different personalities – Ji Woon is a tough guy, Hyun Min is a playboy and Seo Woo is a musician – they don’t like each other at all. Additionally, Ji Woon likes Hye Ji who likes Hyun Min.

One day, their grandfather orders his 3 grandsons to attend his 5th wedding ceremony. Hyun Min doesn’t want to go, but he hires Ha Won for 3 hours and takes her to his grandfather’s wedding ceremony. His plan is to upstage his grandfather’s wedding ceremony with the surprise appearance of Ha Won. There, the grandfather witnesses Ha Won’s no-nonsense attitude towards Hyun Min and decides to hire her as a live-in butler at the Sky House. He hopes she is able to change the ways of his grandsons.

She starts job at the Sky House to fix the behaviors of the grandsons for the grandfather, who is an old, rich and prejudice man. Basically, he destroyed the life of three sons and now expect the grandsons were lovely and obey.

Is it even possible to people who never received real love and just had to satisfy other people’s expectations be lovely and respectful?

The only one among his grandsons able to be his successor, Kang Hyun Min (Ahn Jae Hyun), because he was raised for this, he have been hesitating to accept this.

photo Cinderella7.jpgThe other grandson, Kang Ji Woon (Jung Il Woo – 49 days *-* ) suffered a lot because of his grandpa.

He doesn’t know anything about why her mother had to raise him alone and the grandfather refused to tell him about his past decision of separated Ji Woon’s family because of “social differences”. When her mother died in a fire, he war raised in an orphanage and  his close relationships was just that from work. However, his grandfather did everything to separate them from his friends, because he should be a “heir” and just this.

This grandfather was a such selfish man with everyone… But, he expected his grandsons be obey and supportive.

So instead of move to the Sky House himself and give attention to his family; he decided to married for the fifth time and contract a strange and young woman to educate his grandsons. But of course: he forbidden her to meet any of his grandsons.

A LOT OF WISE DECISIONS!

Park So Dam played the role as Eun Ha Won – the main female character – and, diferent from Beautiful Mind, she didn’t a very good job here, it is true the dialogues doesn’t help too. In the beginning, she was a strong girl. However, eventually, she started having some feelings for Kang Ji Woon and for Kang Hyun Min (Ahn Jae Hyun – Blood). So, all strong moral positions go away, and she transformed herself in as infantilized woman. Good save you when she stars doing her “child voice”.

It is not necessary to say: Jung Il Woo was cute! Maybe he was a too bad temper… but nothing can help with this… because it seems that male protagonists have a characteristic bad temper which distinguishes them… However, he knew how to be sweet and cute. This moments will make your heart scream OWNNN!!!

All of four knight – the three heirs and the personal secretary of grandfather – will start help her to accomplish the missions give to her by the old man. When they show some resistance, she will make her best “child voice” and “sweet face” to convince them to do what she need they do for her. Men must help and protect a woman, right? So, they always do whatever she ask for. As a “bonus”, they could establish a better relation between them and eventually they stared understand and even help each order.

The romantic relationship here was more complicated than a romantic triangle because of Park Hye Ji, who transformed that in a fourth corner relation! The problem was Son Na Eun doesn’t have many acting skills.

Beside that every time she appears I felt bad for her character, because she was a typical drama girls, who suffered for her first love no matters how badly he treats her and in the end… What the time for someone create self-esteem and stop begging for someone love?

The problem here was the excuse for Kang Hyun Min be such a asshole with her: he saw her brother being hit by a car and, as a 9-year-old child, he was scared and decided to run away and, of course, he carried the blame for it all his life punishing himself. How did he decide to self-punish? Moving away from her and being an asshole. How was he punishing? Did anyone believe in this excuse?

Also Ahn Jae Hyun has not improved his acting since he made Blood, a shame.

Poor Kang Seo Woo – the last of the heirs – played by Lee Jung Shin, the cute bassist of CNBlue band. Eun Ha Won never thought about him as a lover, just as a good friend and a sensitive idol. However, he loved her from distance. In my opinion, the writer waste the opportunity to put him together with Hong Ja Yeong – Eun Ha Won’s friend and fan of him as a sing. Wasn’t she on his level?

I will not talk about the Ha Won’s family storyline, because they did a lot of wrong things to her; but, in the end, all of them were forgiven. Ha Won has a huge heart! *ironic*

Also, we discovery why Eun Ha Won love so deeply Kang Ji Woon. And the death of both mother (her and his) was explained. This was the “big” (and very predictable) mystery on this drama.

There is another simultaneous story about the grandfather’s wife and his secretary; but It was another nonsense: How did she get so rich (it is considering the fact she began the drama being poor) and how did managed to get the social credentials to marry a man so attached to money and social relationships as the grandfather? #implausible

Obviously, in the end, they all lived happily ever after.

Despite the joke, the ending was consistent with the rest of the story.

Regardless of all problems, the drama managed to be quite cute at various scenes. Some character contributed to it, for example, the maid, the friend of the Eun Ha Won and the sweetness of Kang Seo Woo.

The best part of this drama?

The soundtrack!!!

Listen to these songs (a lot… I know…) and sing!
